San Miguel Beer took to heart its sorry loss to Alaska Milk Sunday, notching its first win in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup on a 111-98 walloping of Purefoods Friday night at the Astrodome.

The Beermen came out strong and sustained tremendous intensity and energy almost throughout for the big rout making up for their harrowing fold-up against the Aces.

Coach Siot Tanquingcen and his boys were all business after blowing away what had looked a won game against Alaska. The Beermen led by as many as 19 points then only to sputter at the finish and end up losers at 84-85.

The Giants, on the other hand, slumped back to earth after a 77-73 escape act versus the Red Bull Barakos Wednesday.

"We caught them a little flat. They came out sluggish after an uphill battle in their first game," said Tanquingcen.

For all intents and purposes, the game was over right at the half.

The Beermen pummeled and pounded the shell-shocked Giants in the first two quarters, erecting a 57-27 cushion at halftime.

So awful were the Giants in the first half, committing 18 turnovers from which the Beermen produced 16 points.

James Yap and Kerby Raymundo hit their strides in the third quarter but the Beermen had an answer on each of their exploits.

Olsen Racela was three-of-three from the three-point area with Dondon Hontiveros, Jay Washington and Mike Cortez combining for four treys as San Miguel even padded the lead to 85-46 towards the end of the quarter.

The Giants came a bit close as the Beermen lowered down their guards at the finish marred by a confrontation between James Yap and Jay Washington.

Disgusted, Purefoods team manager Alvin Patrimonio and governor Rene Pardo joined the picture, throwing a mouthful at Washington who started it all on a hard bump on Yap.

Washington sat down the final minute after having piled up 14 points, eight rebounds and six blocks in 35 minutes of action.

The Beermen played a well-balanced game with each one having significant contribution.

Danny Seigle had the lowest point production among the Beermen with four but he also put up three rebounds and two assists.

"We played well in the first half pero nawala ang consistency in the second half. We could have played better," said Tanquingcen.

"We have still so many things to work on. Hopefully, we build on this win. We're up against a team (Rain or Shine) playing well in our next game. I'm impressed with them. Ang taas ng morale nila," Tanquingcen added.

SMB battles Alaska, Norwood debuts for Rain or Shine
GMANews.TV

San Miguel Beer attempts to convert a rock-solid line-up into a first win when it takes on Alaska even as Rain or Shine, its confidence boosted by the entry of rookies Gabe Norwood and Solomon Mercado, battles Air21 today in the resumption of the KFC-Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup at the Astrodome.

A team already regarded as mighty in the past, the Beermen even pumped more firepower in the off-season by snatching Jay Washington from Talk 'N Text and Mick Pennisi from Red Bull.

"In terms of personnel, we have improved. The problem now is how do we translate that into wins," said San Miguel coach Siot Tanquingcen.

Easily the most star-studded ball club nowadays, the Beermen finished fifth in the previous Philippine Cup conquered by Sta. Lucia, but is projected to make it to the top four this time.

Still, the game against a team that's always been known as organized and systematic and one that runs the triangle offense with near perfection could end up very interesting.

The Aces beefed up a their fold by acquiring Joe DeVance, last season's No. 1 pick, from Rain or Shine in exchange for Mercado and veteran Eddie Laure.

In addition, Alaska also got Mark Borboron and former NCAA MVP Kelvin De La Pena.

In the opener, all eyes will be on the Elasto Painters, a team described by no less than national coach Yeng Guiao as one which can have a breakout season after back-to-back last-place finishes.

"We now have basically a mix of young and veteran players," said Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia, officially the head coach of the Elasto Painters after serving as the team's interim coach after Leo Austria.

"Air21 will be a good test for us."

Garcia has been open that the first offensive option they will have is to run the open court, a system the Express also love to do.

Norwood, the controversial Fil-Am who nearly became ineligible to join the Draft last August, and Mercado are expected to start off at the backfour for Rain or Shine, with Jay-R Reyes the team's post-up man.

But winning an opening game for the first time still looks as hard as in the past for the Elasto Painters.

The Express have just finished runner-up to Ginebra in the Fiesta Conference, and are regarded as the darkhorses in a tournament they have yet make the quarterfinal round since joining the league six years ago.

Although failed in its bid to land a big man, Air21 got JR Quinahan from Alaska. Quinahan will be tasked to man the post-up position.

"I just hope that JR will solve our problem in the low post," said Air21 coach Bo Perasol.
